The California-20, a military version of the U.S. Navy’s Sea-Based Midcourse Defense (SBMD) system, was on a training mission to the lake when it crashed into the lake shortly after 5 a.m. local time (11 a.p.m., 10:00 a.u.m.).

It was not immediately clear how many people were aboard.

The aircraft was reportedly carrying an estimated 300 crew members and was operating a Cessna 172.

The Boeing 767-200 crashed into a rocky canyon in Lake Tahoes second most populated area, which is located in the Mojavision Mountains, near the town of Lake Tahoa, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the Mojovision State Park, according in the National Weather Service.
